Common auto electrical jobs in Boorooma

Boorooma is changing from rural-residential blocks to suburban streets, and its traffic is shaped by the university and by Vianney College and The Riverina Anglican College. Older cars and long breaks between drives explain much of the work.

Flat batteries after uni breaks

Students often leave a car parked at Boorooma for weeks over a semester break, or drive it only once a week. Modern cars draw a small current even when switched off, and an older battery can't take that for long. Add a hot spell and it may be completely flat when you come back. If it keeps happening, the cause might be the battery, a charging fault or a small drain somewhere. Our guide on why a car battery keeps going flat helps narrow it down.

Battery light on the drive in

A battery light that comes on while you're driving along the Olympic Highway means the car is no longer charging the way it should. The battery is now running everything on its own and will eventually go flat. The usual causes are a worn alternator, a slipping or broken drive belt, or a loose or corroded connection. On an older student car it is worth checking the belt and terminals first. Read battery warning light on while driving for what to do next.

Headlights for the long drive home

Many Boorooma students head home on country highways at the end of term, often at night. Older halogen headlights get dimmer with age, and cloudy lenses cut their output even further. If one globe has blown, the other is usually not far behind, so replace them as a pair. It is also worth checking high beam and tail lights before a long trip. Our guide on how to change a headlight globe covers the common types.

Remotes and central locking

Second-hand cars often come with one tired remote and a central locking system that only works some of the time. A remote that has to be held right next to the car usually needs a new battery, and that is a cheap fix. If one door won't lock or unlock, the actuator inside the door has probably failed. These are common faults on older hatchbacks and sedans and can usually be fixed without replacing the whole system.

Warning light checks before you buy or sell

With students arriving and leaving every year, cars change hands often around Boorooma. A check engine or ABS light is a warning sign on a car you're about to buy, and a reason a buyer might walk away from the one you're selling. Reading the stored fault codes gives a starting point and shows whether the fault is serious or minor. Our guide on reading fault codes with an OBD2 scanner shows how it works.

Boorooma auto electrical questions

I'm leaving my car in Boorooma over the uni break. How do I stop the battery going flat?

If you have power nearby, a smart battery maintainer is the easiest option. It keeps the battery topped up without overcharging. If not, disconnecting the negative terminal stops most drains, though you may lose radio presets and some settings. Ask a friend to start it and drive it for twenty minutes every week or so if they can.

My battery light came on while driving. Can I keep going?

Only for a short distance. The car is running on battery power alone, so it will eventually stall, often with little warning. Turn off the air con, heated seats and other loads, and head straight home or to a workshop. If the steering goes heavy or the temperature rises, stop, because the belt that drives the alternator may also drive other parts.

Local tip for Boorooma

If your car is more than a few years old and you are planning a long drive home at the end of semester, book a battery and charging test a week or two before you leave. It takes only a few minutes, and it is much easier to sort out a weak battery in Wagga than on the side of a highway hours from anywhere.
