Common auto electrical jobs in Lloyd

Lloyd sits west of Holbrook Road on the city's south-western edge, with farmland beyond and the Army Recruit Training Centre at Kapooka nearby. Bigger vehicles, weekend trips and long country drives shape a different job list from the inner suburbs.

Dual battery systems for touring

Many Lloyd families run a 4WD or ute with a camping fridge for weekends at the Murray or the Snowy Mountains. A second battery keeps the fridge running without flattening the starting battery. Older isolators often don't suit modern smart alternators, which drop their output once the main battery is full. A DC-DC charger solves this and charges the auxiliary battery properly. Our guide how does a dual battery system work explains the options.

Caravan brake controllers

Caravans parked beside Lloyd homes need a working electric brake controller in the tow vehicle, and the brakes need to work every time the van is hooked up. A controller that shows no output, brakes that grab, or a van that doesn't brake at all usually comes back to the 12-pin plug, a poor earth or a broken brake wire. Controllers also need to be set up for the van's weight. Our guide how to install an electric brake controller covers the wiring.

Driving lights for country roads

Heading south out of Lloyd on Holbrook Road quickly puts you on dark rural roads with kangaroos about at dusk and dawn. LED light bars and driving lights are a popular fit on local 4WDs and utes. They should be wired through a relay and a fuse, with a switch that works only when the high beam is on. Undersized cable is a common cause of dim lights and melted connectors. Our guide how to wire a 12V relay shows the standard layout.

Ute and work vehicle accessories

Lloyd has plenty of tradespeople who bring a work ute home. Inverters, tool chargers, canopy lights and USB outlets get added over time, often by different people, and the wiring can become a tangle. Every circuit should have its own fuse close to the battery and cable sized for the current and the length of the run. A hot cable or a fuse that keeps blowing is a warning to stop and check. Our guide what size cable do I need 12V has a sizing table.

Lloyd auto electrical questions

Why isn't my caravan battery charging while I tow it?

The most common cause is voltage drop: the cable from the car to the van is too thin for the distance. Modern smart alternators can also run at too low a voltage to charge a second battery properly. A DC-DC charger in the van or vehicle fixes both problems. Check the charging pin on the 12-pin plug and the fuse at the car battery as well.

Can I wire my own light bar?

Many owners do, using a ready-made harness with a relay, fuse and switch. The key points are a fuse close to the battery, cable thick enough for the current, and sealed connectors. Check NSW rules on how driving lights must be switched and mounted. If the vehicle is new, make sure the work won't affect warranty.

Local tip for Lloyd

Before a long weekend trip from Lloyd, plug the caravan in at home and test the brakes at walking pace in the street with the manual override on the brake controller. Also check the van battery is charging with the engine running. Finding a fault in your own driveway beats finding it on the Hume.
