Common auto electrical jobs in Tolland

Tolland is home to Mount Austin High School and the Tolland Shopping Centre on Bourke Street. Part of the suburb is a public housing estate now being renewed under a masterplan approved by Council, so building work and tradie traffic are part of the local mix.

Tool charging in the work ute

Tradies working on new homes in Lloyd, Bourkelands and the Tolland renewal often want to charge tool batteries from the ute. An inverter can do it, but it needs heavy cable, a fuse at the battery and ideally a second battery so the starting battery is not drained. A small inverter plugged into the cigarette socket will not run much. Our guide on how to choose and install an inverter explains how to size one.

Reversing cameras that drop out

A reversing camera that flickers, rolls or shows a blue screen usually has a wiring problem, not a failed camera. On utes and wagons the cable often runs through the tailgate or tub, where it flexes and gets wet. Plugs at the back of the car corrode, especially on vehicles washed with a pressure cleaner. Checking the power, earth and video plug is the place to start.

Starter or battery?

When a car will not start on a cold Tolland morning, it is tempting to buy a battery straight away. A weak starter motor or a corroded cable can give exactly the same symptoms, though. A battery test and a quick voltage drop test on the cables can save you replacing the wrong part. Our guide on whether it is the starter motor or the battery explains the tell-tale signs.

Crimping and joining wires properly

Plenty of locals do their own small wiring jobs, such as adding a USB socket or a light to a trailer. The weak spot is usually the join: twisted wires wrapped in tape work loose and corrode. A proper crimp terminal with heat shrink lasts far longer and is safer. Our guide on how to crimp wire connectors shows which crimper and terminals to use.

Tolland auto electrical questions

Can I run power tools from my car battery?

Only for short periods and with the right gear. An inverter draws a lot of current, so the cable must be heavy enough and fused close to the battery. Running tools off the starting battery with the engine off can leave you unable to start. A dual battery set-up with a separate auxiliary battery is the better choice if you charge tools every day.

Why does my reversing camera only work sometimes?

Intermittent cameras are usually caused by a loose or corroded plug, a broken wire where the cable bends through the tailgate, or a poor earth. Faults that appear after rain or washing point to water in a connector. Sometimes the camera's power is taken from the reverse light circuit, and a failing reverse globe or switch can also cut it out.

Local tip for Tolland

With roadworks and building sites near Tolland, dust gets everywhere. Wipe the reversing camera lens and parking sensors often, and keep fuse box lids firmly closed. If your ute lives on site, check under the bonnet now and then for rodent nests: mice and rats like to chew wiring in vehicles parked near open paddocks.
